Council adopts code change requiring places of worship to meet resort/commercial architectural standards

The Midway City Council on April 12 moved to amend section 16.13.370 to require commercial and resort architectural standards to also apply to places of worship. Staff said the planning commission had unanimously recommended the change and that the revision would cover religious structures proposed in town going forward.
Council members asked whether civic buildings (fire stations, police stations, city hall) should be included or addressed separately; the staff response noted the city exercises greater control over publicly funded civic buildings and that adding civic buildings to the code could be done where appropriate. Several council members favored giving the visual and architectural committee an advisory role and preserving the elected council as the final decision-making body.
A motion to approve the code amendment passed on a unanimous roll-call vote. Council members said they would continue to refine implementation details and confirm liaison reporting from the visual/architectural committee to the council.
