Superintendent Volpe corrects Title I guidance, says transportation issues down about 75% and teases district dashboard

Superintendent Michael Volpe told the Hillsborough Township Board of Education on Sept. 9 that the district’s start to the school year is positive after visits to all nine schools and that “we probably cut [transportation issues] down by about 75%” compared with last year.
Volpe said the district will continue to address routine start-of-year issues and thanked staff for their work. He also said he will present a public strategic-plan dashboard at the October meeting after showing it to the board first: board members “you'll see it before I reveal it to the public, so you can get a first glance.”
On federal funding, Volpe corrected an earlier statement about Title I use and collaborative federal monitoring. “I made a mistake,” he said, and clarified that Title I funds can be used toward salaries when the district’s use is consistent with the monitoring guidance and appropriate accounting (for example, combining grant funds with local funds when permitted). “We can use Title I funds towards salaries if it is exclusively combined with anything else,” he said, adding the district is making adjustments to its practices based on that clarification.
Volpe closed by thanking staff and the board and saying he looks forward to what the district will accomplish this year.
