Zion ESD 6 board receives budget training from CSBO; unanimously approves meeting agenda

The Board of Education for School District No. 6 in Zion, Illinois, approved the meeting agenda and received a budget-training presentation during a special meeting on Sept. 11, 2025.
President Margie Taylor called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. and conducted roll call; members present were Jazmine Crump, Ken Fielding, Netya Perez Rivera, Jacqueline San Diego, Robert Surano and Margie Taylor. Denise Lear was absent. Board member Ken Fielding moved to approve the agenda as presented; Robert Surano seconded. The roll-call vote recorded six ayes and no nays, and the motion carried.
There were no public comments during the public participation portion of the meeting, President Taylor said.
Samantha Snyder, the district’s chief school business official (CSBO), led a training session titled "Mechanics of a School District Budget". Snyder presented an overview of budget roles and responsibilities, the district budget calendar and cycle, the distinction among budget funds, typical revenue and expenditure categories, and the board’s budgeting priorities. She provided board members with reference materials including "Mechanics of a School District Budget (ISBE)", "Understanding School Finance (IASB)", "Essentials of Illinois School Finance" (IASB, J. Fritts, 10th ed.), and relevant district budget policies to guide future decisions.
The training was framed as educational; no formal budget decisions were made at the meeting. With no further business, the board voted to adjourn; the meeting ended at 6:59 p.m.
