Waterloo council approves a slate of special-event permits and street closures through 2026

The Waterloo City Council approved a series of special-event permits and associated temporary street closures for events spanning late 2025 into 2026.
Among the actions, the council approved Resolution 25-11 to allow a weekly Market Street market at 113 South Main beginning 08/26/2025 and continuing through 08/26/2026, including temporary closures of Market Street between 1st and 4th streets on designated Tuesdays. Councilors also approved a high-school parade scheduled for 09/24/2025 with closures of Belle Fontaine, 1st Market, Main, 4th and Rogers streets.
Other approved permits included a Monroe County Shriners solicitation and intersection activity on 10/24–10/25/2025, a trunk-or-treat event on 10/31/2025 with closure of Main Street between 3rd and Mill streets, the office club’s annual 5K on 11/01/2025 (partial closure of Rogers Street), and a Firebird Fest permit for 05/16/2026 with Main Street closures between 1st and 4th.
Mayor commented on consistency in supporting applicants, noting the city’s approach to event promoters: “We do the same support for everyone, and we don't try to pick winners and losers,” during discussion of the Firebird Fest promoter.
Most items were approved on motions and roll-call votes. The council recorded an abstention on the VFW Post 6504 beautification item (an unrelated permit) but otherwise registered affirmative votes to move the event permits forward. Staff will handle the typical event notifications and public-safety coordination for road closures and traffic management.
The permits include dates and partial or full street closures; event organizers are responsible for arranging required insurance, traffic control and coordination with city staff ahead of the events.
