Handbook and defensible-space brochure near completion amid staffing gaps

Commission staff reported progress on the Columbia River Gorge scenic-area handbook and related outreach materials, but flagged staffing and data gaps that could affect timing. Staff told the Communications Committee that the handbook is in final graphic and text-editing stages and that illustrators are contracted for final graphics, but that a Forest Service landscape architect who had been leading a related effort has left the agency, creating a capacity gap.
The committee heard that a defensible-space handout for landowners is nearly finished and is expected within about two weeks. Committee members emphasized the urgency: one commissioner said they would like to see the two-page defensible-space handout by June 15 because wildfire season is approaching. Staff said partners and counties are reviewing content and that a preview will be provided to commissioners before public release.
No formal action was taken. Staff said they would provide the promised pre-release preview and continue to coordinate with county partners and other contributors to finalize graphics and copy.
