Public works reports alley sewer collapse; administration announces April 6 budget hearing and meter app rollout

A public works staff member told the Cresco City Council that crews will repair a storm sewer that has sunk in an alley behind a resident's property after the weekend snow, and that the alley was closed because it could further cave in.
"They predicted 8 to 12 inches of snow for us," the public works staff member said, describing the multi-agency weather calls and the uncertainty in forecasts before crews responded. The staff member said crews found a storm sewer sink near Jason Miller's property and would begin repairs during the week.
Police commended residents for keeping vehicles off streets during the storm, saying that compliance allowed snowplows to clear streets more effectively. "So all those who did that, thank you," the public works staff member said in response to the police report.
Administration provided several updates for council members: a public hearing on the 2026 budget is scheduled for April 6 at 5:00 p.m.; a draft comprehensive plan has been circulated for Planning & Zoning review; a fire-department tanker is being offered for sealed bids (bids due March 25 at 4:00 p.m.); and the city has switched to cellular water meters with an "ion water" app that lets customers monitor usage (the app displays times in Pacific time and staff offered in-person help at City Hall). "So that will be the public hearing for the budget adoption," the administration staff member said.
A committee member reported on fitness-center planning: consultants trimmed the project's estimated cost from roughly $9,000,000 and recommended building in phases, starting with park-and-rec offices and storage to reduce initial capital needs while allowing future fundraising.
Administration also noted the Board of Adjustment will meet March 25 at 6:00 p.m. to consider a variance requested by the school. No audience public comments were recorded at the meeting; council business proceeded to new-business items after the updates.
Council and administration agreed to include instructions on the ion water app in the next billing mailing and on the city's Facebook page, and to help residents sign up at City Hall.
