Hope Mills commissioners approve budget corrections, small committee allocations and veteran committee changes

Budget corrections and police spending The board approved a correction to budget amendment number 6 for the police department ($28,775) to change the funding source from asset forfeiture to fund balance; staff said the amount did not change, only the funding account. The board later approved budget amendment number 8 ($3,800) to purchase bulletproof vests for officers, funded from the asset forfeiture account.
Historic Preservation Commission funding Commissioner Marley reported the HPC’s consultant contract consumed the committee’s fiscal allocation and requested an additional $2,600 to support remaining activities (piano tuning $500; historic district projects $500; holiday open house and accessories $600 total; Charter Day printing/advertising $800; stipend reimbursement $200). The board approved the supplemental $2,600 by motion.
Veterans Affairs Committee reorganization and appointment The board voted to remove current members from the Veterans Affairs Committee to allow reapplication and to restart the committee’s membership process; the board then nominated and appointed Charlie Grimes to the committee after a liaison report noting his 27 years of military service.
Votes and process All items described above passed by motion and voice vote; Mayor Pro Tem Dr. McCray recorded affirmative votes on multiple items. Several items were discussed as clarifications of funding sources and committee bylaws; commissioners asked staff to return with committee bylaws or a formal chamber proposal when the Chamber of Commerce’s request for a joint committee is brought back in November.
Next steps: staff to finalize contractual funding-source documentation for the police server correction, coordinate HPC spending and report back on committee bylaws and the chamber’s joint-committee proposal at the next meeting.
