Urbana SD 116 board adopts revised 2025–26 calendar, adds student day and Yom Kippur holiday

The Urbana SD 116 board voted to adopt a revised 2025–26 academic calendar after the calendar committee reconvened following a tied vote at the previous meeting.
The committee recommended adding one student attendance day at the end of first semester (so student attendance continues through Friday), moving the staff institute/semester‑planning day to Monday, December 22, and adding Yom Kippur (Thursday, Oct. 2) as a fall holiday. The committee reached its recommendation by survey and suggested the approach as the least disruptive option for staff and families.
"The committee overwhelmingly chose to go with the option of extending first semester by adding a student attendance day," an administrator explained. The board moved to adopt the revised calendar; the clerk called roll and recorded affirmative votes from Member Hixson, Member Baxley, Member Langendorff, Vice President Exum, President Pawlowski, Member Statton and Member Jones. The motion passed.
Administration said it will use the same calendar format to develop a draft 2026–27 calendar for review at the March 11 meeting and that staff will continue to work with the union and administrators to identify options for staff on the rescheduled institute day.
