Resident urges protection for aging Laurel Avenue–Newbury neighborhood

"There is one particular neighborhood within the city that I would characterize as a high risk neighborhood from the point of view of building structures and land use ... it's the Laurel Avenue, Newbury area," Beal said, describing houses built between about 1870 and 1920 that have been divided into smaller units, have limited on‑street parking and yards crowded with vehicles.
Beal noted the neighborhood's historic character — "prosperous people's houses ... Corinthian columns holding up the porches" — and urged the committee to "develop some strategies for propping up, preserving, and improving that neighborhood." Chair John Cleveland thanked him and the committee moved on to the agenda item on land‑use categories.
The committee did not take immediate policy action on the comment at this meeting; staff and members acknowledged the concern as part of future boundary and character discussions and identified public engagement as the next step to solicit additional local input.
