ORTONVILLE, Mich. — The Ortonville Village Council approved routine financial and event items and made two notable policy choices at its Oct. 27 regular meeting.
Presiding as pro tempore, Nivelt opened the meeting and the council approved disbursements for September 2025 totaling $287,650.63 after a motion from Trustee Randazzo and support from Trustee Faulker. The roll-call vote was recorded as 6–0 in favor.
In new business, Village Manager Ryan outlined changes to the federal CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) program for fiscal 2026, describing two funding paths: a guaranteed allocation for public-service projects and a competitive county pool. The council voted unanimously to commit the village’s 2026 public-service CDBG funds to BGYA, a community organization identified in the packet. The council also authorized Village Manager Ryan and staff to pursue applications for the competitive portion of the FY26 CDBG funds; that motion passed 6–0 though the minutes note support was not formally solicited on the record.
The council considered renewing the village’s cable franchise agreement with Brandon Township for 2026–2028. Trustees raised concerns that the proposed contract would limit the Village’s use of services funded through township taxes, offered insufficient control or transparency about eligible expenditures, and lacked clear answers from the township supervisor. Trustee Faulker moved to renew the contract with Brandon Township; the motion failed 6–0.
Councilors approved multiple community events. Trustee Randazzo moved to approve a Halloween parade packet, and Trustee Green moved to approve participation in Brandon Township’s "Christmas in the Village" with the condition that no confetti or residue be left behind; both motions carried 6–0. DDA President‑Elect Claxton presented a flyer describing the DDA’s "Season of Holiday Magic" activities, which council members praised as supporting local businesses.
Manager Ryan provided an update on the village audit, seasonal decoration planning, Christmas-light coordination, a new vendor to support wayfinding efforts, and confirmed proof of liability insurance for council reference.
The meeting adjourned at 9:09 p.m. after a motion from Trustee Green and support from Trustee Faulker.
