Allegany County budget update: officials testify in Annapolis, await possible restoration of $6.3 million

County staff briefed commissioners on a fiscal year 2027 budget update and recent advocacy in Annapolis seeking relief for a frozen disparity grant.
Jason said he traveled to Annapolis to testify before legislative committees and sought restoration of roughly $6.3 million the county expected after a prior local income tax increase. "We were slated to get $6,300,000 extra and the governor said, no," he said, and reported early feedback in committee was positive.
Jason said Prince George's County had raised similar concerns in committee, which staff felt strengthened Allegany County's case. He told commissioners that once language is locked in at the state level, the county might know within a week or two how much of the requested funding will be restored, and that department budget hearings and operating allocations will begin in the county soon.
Separately, Jason gave an audit status update: three of four component'unit audits for fiscal year 2025 are complete (library, Allegany College, Lavelle Sanitary), and the board of education draft audit was expected in the next week or two, after which the county audit can be finished and any necessary deadline extensions noted with the state.
Staff said they will move budgets from finance to operating departments next week and hold hearings with departments in the near term.
