Superintendent George Hummer used the district’s monthly "Scoop" update to highlight recent school recognitions, outline the district’s FY27 budget timeline and promote programming tied to the Ignite 2030 strategic plan.
Hummer announced that Sherando High School and James Wood High School were recognized as distinguished schools by the Virginia Department of Education, calling the designations “a significant accomplishment and a reflection of a lot of hard work.” He said the honors reflect persistent effort by students and staff across the division.
He also said Frederick County Middle School has “made tremendous progress this past year and is now officially out of federal review,” crediting staff and students for the work that led to that outcome.
On the budget, Hummer outlined three near-term dates as the division moves toward final FY27 approvals. He said the Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, April 8 to adopt the FY27 budget; the school division will hold a school board work session on Tuesday, April 14; and the school board is expected to vote to approve the FY27 budget on Tuesday, April 21. Hummer thanked the Board of Supervisors for its partnership and noted the talks have been challenging but constructive. He did not specify dollar amounts or budget allotments in the update.
Hummer tied the operational priorities to Ignite 2030, the district’s strategic plan aimed at expanding student opportunities and pathways beyond graduation. He said the division is expanding programming, including a new aerospace pathway in partnership with the local airport, as an example of connecting students to “real world experiences and future careers.”
Hummer closed by thanking students, staff and families for their support as the district moves through the final months of the 2026 school year and said listeners can expect the next monthly update the following month.
