Priscilla Mercado, who identified herself as an associate manager and advocate for Special Olympics Southern California, asked the council to partner with the city to bring local year‑round sports programming to people with intellectual disabilities.
Mercado told the council Special Olympics offers training and competitions across four seasons and currently provides 13 sports; bringing the program to Twentynine Palms would expand access to free athletic programming for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. “By partnering with the city of Twentynine Palms, we can bring this transformative program directly into our community,” she said, describing benefits for athletes’ fitness, social skills and sense of achievement.
Councilmembers thanked Mercado for the presentation and asked staff to coordinate follow‑up if council members and community groups wanted to support the effort. No formal action was taken at the meeting.
