Board members raised several concerns: uncertainty about how many buildings would ultimately require renovation if a pending redistricting/demographic study recommends consolidating kindergarten sites; the risk of committing $80,000 now to schematic drawings that might need to be redone later; and whether one‑time restoration funds should be applied to capital renovation work or to restoring instructional positions and lowering class sizes.
Supporters said the architect had visited schools and that some small corrective items (for example, improperly sized sinks and toilets) could be identified regardless of final redistricting decisions. Opponents argued the contract price should be tiered to reflect fewer schools if redistricting reduces the renovation scope.
The board’s motion to table passed on roll call. Several members asked staff to (1) pursue an updated demographic/redistricting study through a competitive contracting process, (2) ask the architect to provide alternative cost estimates for both a six‑school and reduced‑school renovation scenario, and (3) return the item to a future agenda after that information is available.
The superintendent noted the district must spend certain one‑time funds within the year and that full‑day kindergarten planning ties into capital priorities; board members said they preferred more concrete demographic information before committing to design fees.
