Council moves ahead on recycling-center cleanup; discusses temporary trailer rules and Plain Street repairs

Public works consultants and the DPW committee walked the recycling site and reached unanimous agreement with staff to relocate trailers, remove debris and reclaim space for improved public access and a future pedestrian connection to a proposed train-trestle bridge. The committee plans auctions for surplus vehicles and will present a timeline for cleanup and next steps at an upcoming meeting.
Administrator Neil Henry told the council that a pre-construction meeting for Plain Street drainage and a sinkhole remediation took place and estimated the remediation would be “about a 2 or 3 week job.” He also said the town received and is vetting eight bids for a well-field transmission facility.
Council members debated whether to craft a temporary stay to permit 4-by-8 private landscaping trailers during spring cleanup before a policy change expected in June. Staff cautioned that restrictions appear tied to trailer weight and external regulations and that an attorney’s opinion may be required. The chair directed the DPW committee to consider draft language for the next meeting rather than rush an immediate change.
The council did not take a formal vote on a temporary exception; members agreed to pursue committee review and report back.
