City staff reported Aug. 1 that a preconstruction meeting for the Crest Avenue project took place and that contractor Think Pavers will begin work under a roughly 70-day contract. Staff said the only planned full closure is a short interruption for installation of a drainage pipe across the roadway, which they expect to schedule close to the start of the school year; most other work (curb, sidewalk and related items) will occur on one side of the street so through traffic will generally be maintained.
Officials said work hours are planned from about 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily and that the contractor intends to work Fridays except when weather requires a schedule change. Staff added that property owners were consulted during design and that the city will deliver a door notice to affected residents and notify schools so parents and bus operators can plan alternate routes if needed.
A resident asked whether the street would be closed for the full 70 days and raised a separate concern about a paver wall that a homeowner believes could be replaced with concrete. Staff asked the resident to forward property details and said the city has told property owners any items on their property would be restored to the way they were; staff will have an on-site representative during construction to address issues as they arise.
Council and staff also discussed coordination with bus companies and New Jersey Transit for nearby bus stops and noted the project timing likely will not finish before school opens; the pipe crossing will be scheduled to minimize disruption to school traffic.
