Carlsbad staff highlight crosswalks, Coastal Rail Trail work and emergency repairs in semiannual transportation report

City transportation staff presented the semiannual transportation report on July 1, highlighting recent and upcoming projects and emergency repairs.
Nathan Schmidt, transportation planning and mobility manager, outlined three headline items: (1) recent implementation of high-visibility crosswalks, flashing pavement lights and curb extensions at five Carlsbad Boulevard intersections; (2) ongoing construction on the Avenida Encinas Coastal Rail Trail segment between Poinsettia Station and Carlsbad Boulevard with lane realignment and class 2 buffered bike lanes; and (3) emergency slope and Buena Vista Creek remediation work completed after storm-related damage. Schmidt noted the intent of these efforts is to balance traffic operations with safety and multimodal access.
Staff listed near-term priorities: completing this year’s slurry seal projects, final engineering for Terramar coastal improvements, several safe-routes-to-school items (Jefferson Elementary, Sage Creek High School and Hope Elementary), traffic-calming construction closures and a new traffic signal activation at Avenida Encinas (near Chick-fil-A). The commission received the report and approved a nomination for a commissioner to present the semiannual report to City Council on July 30.
Next steps: staff will continue construction oversight, finalize engineering packages for upcoming projects, and report back to the commission as milestones are reached.
