Oscoda County approves campground fee increase; park manager reports expected Recreation Passport and township revitalization support

Oscoda County Park Manager Jimmy Vance asked the board on Jan. 14 to raise electric campsite fees by $2 per day, citing unchanged rates for more than three years and rising electric costs. The board approved the increase on a unanimous roll-call vote.
Vance told commissioners the on-site manager house could be closed to rentals and reserved for managers during the summer to provide 24/7 coverage; he said the house generated approximately $4,000 in rental revenue in 2024. He also said the county received notice from Nico Tucker at NEMCOG that a $99,500 Recreation Passport Grant to purchase new playground equipment has been approved, pending confirmation.
Separately, Big Creek Township Supervisor Randy Booth presented a map and plan for downtown Mio improvements that include sidewalks, lighting and a proposed park. Booth said the township plans to apply for a $1.1 million Revitalization and Placemaking Grant with a $550,000 township match and requested a county resolution of support. The board adopted Resolution 2025-002 "Support Big Creek Township Revitalization and Placemaking Grant Application" by unanimous vote.
The approved campground rate change and the board's support for the township grant are intended to support local recreation and downtown safety improvements.
