Bayonne board approves spring coaching slate after public testimony; vote 6-1

President Desmond made the motion to consider items B1–B32 and Trustee Young seconded it. Trustee Gadeschi Rodriguez said her "priority are these students" and that continuity of experience for students and coaches was paramount; she then voted yes. Trustee Gonzales announced he would vote no. Trustees Saniola, Sklafane, Young, Vice President Maggio and President Desmond voted yes, and the motion carried on the floor.
Supporters described long personal ties to the program. Sal Gitani, a lifelong Bayonne resident, told trustees the late timing left coaches "in limbo" and compared the five-day gap before the season to prior seasons when hires were made weeks earlier: "How is a coach supposed to effectively schedule games... and prepare for a successful season in five days?" Several former players and parents, including Shane Paradigm and Ryan McNamara, credited Coach Hoffman with building a culture of inclusion, mentorship and life skills that they said benefited students on and off the field.
Not all public comment was uniformly supportive. Teshia Mateo urged trustees to "please vote no and protect these children," describing a rumor about an alleged inappropriate touching and saying that complaints she reported did not receive a response she expected. Mateo said the athletic director convened a restorative circle and that subsequent handling left her family feeling unprotected.
Board members discussed procedural limits on their authority; one trustee clarified that the board "support[s] or withhold[s] support on items put before us" and that hiring recommendations come from the superintendent. The chair also noted that each individual named in B1–B32 received a Rice notice and had opted to have any discussion in public rather than in executive session.
The board took the vote on the floor after the public-comment period and approved the full slate. The meeting moved on to other items and then adjourned.
The immediate outcome is the district-approved coaches for the spring season (agenda items B1–B32).
