Kewanee approves engineering contract for South Street resurfacing; sidewalks, rights-of-way remain unresolved

The Kewanee City Council on July 28 approved Bill 25-72, authorizing City Manager Gary Bradley to execute an agreement with Hutchison Engineering to prepare plans and specifications for resurfacing West South Street using the city’s allotment of federal funding. Councilmember Colomer moved to approve; Councilmember Komnick seconded and the motion passed 4-0.
Representatives from Hutchison Engineering told the council that planning would begin in November and conclude in February, with construction contingent on federal approvals and anticipated to occur the following year. Councilmember Cernovich pressed staff about sidewalks, right-of-way acquisition and costs. Hutchison representatives said a full sidewalk project could require additional right-of-way and might cost roughly $3 million, and noted the city had previously been denied a sidewalk grant for this corridor.
City Manager Gary Bradley and councilmembers asked staff to review prior grant applications and provide more detailed estimates and a long-term street-maintenance plan. The council also separately approved a Motor Fuel Tax resolution to allow street maintenance work on other streets this fall.
