City Manager Tom Hanson told the council the Weber County sheriff contract will increase to about $1.4 million and that the county plans to offload nine positions back to contract cities; Hanson said Washington Terrace cannot absorb the additional personnel cost and requested a meeting with county commissioners.
City Manager Tom Hanson told the Washington Terrace City Council on March 17 that the city's contract with the Weber County Sheriff's Office is expected to rise to about $1.4 million as the county adjusts for recruitment and retention and potential additional staffing.
Hanson said the county plans to "offload" nine individuals back to contract cities, describing the change as shifting the personnel burden to cities without adding services. "The 9 employees become the freight of the contract cities, without the additional services," Hanson said, and he told the council he has made it clear the city cannot pay for the additional nine officers.
Hanson and Lt. Sean Endsley said they would seek a meeting with county commissioners, the sheriff's office and contract cities to get firm numbers for budgeting. Hanson said the city needs those contract figures in March to complete budget planning.
Lt. Endsley said the proposed increase would keep staffing and service levels the same if funded. The council did not take a final action on the contract during the meeting but directed staff to pursue the scheduled meeting with commissioners and to return with detailed numbers.
