Roselle Park Board highlights student awards and reports rising enrollment

The Roselle Park Board of Education opened its public session with student recognitions and administrative reports. Principal Plaka presented Sherman School honorees — safety patrol members and youth art month recipients — and called up students for photographs and accolades. "These students represent the very best of who we are as a district," the principal said, thanking teachers and staff for their work on student programs.
Athletics presenter Mr. Kane reviewed winter sports successes, noting that the girls basketball team won the Valley Division and that Sydney Smith became the district's all-time leading scorer with 2,069 career points. Kane also recognized county and state qualifiers in wrestling, track and other winter programs and invited teams and coaches forward for acknowledgement.
Superintendent Goyce gave a residency and enrollment update, reporting that the district conducted multiple residency verifications between Feb. 15 and March 20, initiated four residency investigations and performed three surveillances related to one questionable residency. She said disenrollment packets were issued to two families affecting five students but that overall enrollment showed steady growth, increasing from about 1,921 students in September to about 1,981 in March, with gains across elementary schools and preschool.
Board members read a resolution recognizing Brian Luna Castro as the district's unsung hero; the board presented the resolution and invited the student to be photographed with officials. The superintendent and board thanked teachers, coaches and staff for the year’s student successes and noted upcoming public exhibitions and events tied to the recognitions.
Public commenters during the meeting thanked district staff for improvements and urged continued attention to classroom conditions and student supports. The board then moved on to the consent agenda and other formal business.
