The Needham Design Review Board on March 23 approved exterior-cladding and window replacement plans for 87 Chestnut Street, with the board adding a condition that the new accent downlights and band lighting be turned off by 11:00 p.m. and that signage depicted on the drawings is not part of this approval.
Applicant Charlie Crivo described removing failing EIFS, cladding brick piers with an aluminum composite material band around the building, replacing windows with fixed units that include an operable hopper below, and adding recessed pinhole-style downlights under a projecting band. The applicant said the band projects about 14 inches and the lights are accent fixtures rather than bright floodlights.
Board members raised questions about window types, the appearance of the band and the addition of lighting. Chair Mark Losing and members agreed the design improved the building’s appearance; Millie Pradhan confirmed window color and Felix Semmel suggested a turn-off time for the accent lighting. The board clarified signage shown in the packet is not included in this approval and that signage will be reviewed separately.
A roll-call vote approved the façade renovations with the condition that the new accent/downlights be turned off at 11:00 p.m.; the motion recorded unanimous support.
