Needham board conditionally approves VIP Tire signage, asks for size adjustments

The Needham Design Review Board on March 23 conditionally approved channel-letter signage for VIP Tire at 444 Hillside Ave, with the board requiring the applicant to adjust sign proportions so the full perimeter box for each sign does not exceed 32 square feet.
Applicant Sean Murphy said the proposed front sign is 32 square feet and the rear sign is 31.5 square feet; the board noted how the town measures sign area (a single perimeter box drawn to the furthest extremities), and asked the applicant to proportionally reduce the dimensions if necessary so each sign meets the 32-square-foot perimeter requirement. "We just need you to reduce it before you make it," Chair Mark Losing said.
Board members described the design as straightforward and said they had no major aesthetic concerns. The board took a roll-call vote to approve the front sign with the sizing condition and then separately approved the rear sign with the same condition.
The approvals are conditional on the applicant submitting revised measurements or drawings that demonstrate each sign's perimeter box is 32 square feet or smaller before fabrication; the board recorded unanimous support for both approvals.
