Residents press Adelanto council on park safety, sidewalks and a pallet-yard fire hazard

Several Adelanto residents used public comment on Oct. 23 to press the council for faster maintenance and safety work in neighborhood parks and streets.
Jocelyn, a resident who said she has lived in her neighborhood 22 years, asked the council to replace wood chips at local play areas with safer surfacing, saying chips have gone unreplaced for five years and that glass and debris present a danger to children. She said neighborhood sidewalks on streets including Victor, Verbena, Aster and Mojave are overgrown, forcing schoolchildren into bike lanes.
"When I go to the park, I go every day. My son plays football there. Five years plus, those wood chips haven't been replaced," Jocelyn said, urging the council to act to make parks safer for children.
Another resident, Tina, reported what she estimated to be more than 500 pallets stored at a nearby pallet yard and described it as a possible fire hazard, especially on windy days. Tina also asked whether a long-missing fire hydrant on Concord and Aztec could be restored.
City staff responded that they would meet with the commenters to identify the precise locations and examine whether the areas fall under special maintenance districts or other programs, and to report back. The city manager told the meeting staff would contact the residents and follow up.
Separately, a public commenter suggested the city pursue cannabis-related environmental cleanup grant programs that can fund remediation; staff said they would accept offers of help locating grant opportunities and will follow up.
No council action was taken at the meeting; the mayor asked staff to follow up directly with the speakers and to report back to council.
