Several residents used the council’s Feb. 23 public comment period to ask for immediate shelter or rental support and to describe the impacts of unstable housing on children.
Alanis T, introduced by the Moderator, said she and her family are in urgent need after recent hardships and asked for help finding refuge as her son faces surgery in March.
Kimberly described losing housing after job loss and said she and her daughter are currently living on the street; she asked the city to consider rent assistance or other shelter options so she can resume work.
Irma Suarez said she was speaking on behalf of United Families in Need and described a child who had missed two months of school because the family lacked a stable address; she asked for support to help families find jobs and stable housing and said community providers like “Miss V” had been helpful.
Timothy said he was speaking for Mary Uary and described sleeping in a car for three months with two autistic children; he specifically requested shelter resources for families with children on the autism spectrum, saying existing programs were limited.
The comments were personal pleas during public comment; the council did not respond during the session. Council staff may follow up with speakers who raised matters that lend themselves to follow-up.
