The New Haven Unified School District Board of Education adopted Resolution 0182425 recognizing November 2024 as Native American Heritage Month and took a series of routine approvals during its Oct. 15 meeting.
Trustee Raffae read the resolution, which recognizes Native Americans as descendants of the original indigenous inhabitants of what is now the United States and specifically honors the Ohlone Chochenyo people of the area around Union City. "We recognize and thank the Ohlone people as the original stewards of this land," Trustee Raffae said during the land-acknowledgment and resolution reading. The board moved, seconded and adopted the resolution; the chair called for the ayes and the motion carried.
The board also approved several action items by motion and voice vote: a memorandum of understanding between New Haven Unified and the California School Employees Association (CSEA); the 2024–25 classified salary schedule; and comprehensive school safety plans for each school site. The meeting record shows the motions were moved, seconded and approved; transcript notes state "Motion carries." Consent-agenda items 13.1 through 13.18 were likewise approved after no member requested a pull for separate consideration.
The board reported out from closed session that it had approved a settlement agreement between the district and a family in OAH case number 2024080565 (vote reported as 4–0 with President Gonzales absent). The settlement was disclosed during the open-session report out.
What’s next: the district will implement the approved salary schedule, MOU and safety plans, and staff will follow procurement steps tied to the AMIM plan and the grant encumbrance deadline.
