The Los Banos Unified board unanimously approved a 12‑month lease with the California Association of Realtors to provide temporary office space for the district’s Community Schools team, pantry and clothing closet while the planned Family Resource Center is completed.
Trustee Belladeo pulled the item to confirm whether the lease included renovation costs and to ask about funding sources. Staff explained the lease is a short‑term solution for a move‑in ready commercial space (a former bank building at 6th and I), that furnishings and some items will be inherited from the existing TK center, and that the lease will be funded from the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) rather than community schools grant funds. The lease is for 12 months with an option to convert to month‑to‑month for up to four months afterward if renovations run long.
Community schools director Dr. Wailer described recent programs: a holiday gift giveaway distributing about 1,200 gifts, a junior high/high school winter camp with hands‑on STEM offerings (welding, plant science, coding, biomed) hosted in partnership with Merced College and outside vendors, and expanded attendance‑support services and home visits. Trustees expressed support while also noting budget scrutiny for using LCAP funds for a temporary lease.
Staff said the district submitted DSA (Division of the State Architect) applications for the Family Resource Center renovations in December and expects review delays due to a backlog; estimated renovation work could take six to seven months once started, so the short‑term lease addresses an immediate staffing and program space need.
The board approved the lease and directed staff to continue work toward the Family Resource Center and return with updates on the renovation timeline.
