Parent urges board to ensure compliance after alleged athletic uniform fees

The commenter (announced by the presiding officer as Alexis Rahel) asked the board to address "people fee compliance" for athletic uniforms, student safety and equitable funding across athletic programs. She cited "Education Code section 49010 and 49011" and said those statutes prohibit requiring students to pay fees or purchase items as a condition of participating in an educational activity, including extracurricular athletics.
The commenter said cheer families have repeatedly paid for uniforms, that no free options were offered, and that some site minutes support those claims. She asked the board to review the athletic department budget, consider reclassifying varsity cheer from a sideline activity to competitive cheer to support CIF participation, and adopt the elementary model of providing uniforms to all students who make a team to avoid stigmatizing loaner uniforms.
President Avena thanked the speaker; trustees discussed the issue later in their board reports and said an analysis of uniform costs would be helpful.
