District staff detail summer facilities work as supporters press for Measure SOS bond

Assistant Superintendent Brenna Tirones introduced James Fahey from maintenance and operations, who reviewed work at multiple sites: temporary spray‑on coating to extend life of older Ridgecrest roofs (a 5‑10 year band‑aid), PVC roofing at Cornerstone meant to last ~30 years, fence and gate installations, asphalt and basketball court resurfacing at Lanata Bay, hybrid vinyl classroom flooring at PVIS, installation of 80 football lockers at PV High, restroom fixture and exhaust fan replacements, and completion of HVAC work at Point Vicente before school start.
On turf at Ridgecrest, Fahey described a change order after finding track constraints that required reconfiguring turf runs; the transcript contained an unclear numeric transcription of the original turf cost, so staff said construction and site work had additional charges and that some amounts were subject to change orders and pay‑apps being finalized.
Board members and the faculty union described operational impacts at the start of school: Tim Coleman (PBFA) noted facilities issues at Peninsula High — no bells/PA, flooded bathrooms during the day — and said PBFA fully supports the bond measure. Parent and public commenters cited leaking roofs, asbestos concerns and other deferred needs as reasons to support Measure SOS. Student board members reported improved bathrooms and cited positive feedback from their peers.
Finance and schedule notes: staff said summer project expenses were “pretty much stayed on target” with the adopted 24‑25 budget, with a few minor change orders for Ridgecrest and unforeseen conditions related to rains. Staff said portable classrooms patched now will be removed later when longer‑term funds become available.
What happens next: staff will finalize pay applications and provide follow‑up reports to the board; the bond campaign and oversight will continue as the district and community discuss funding strategies.
