Business association pitches downtown lighting, music and winter rink; Paddy Mountain ribbon cutting set for May 9

Crystal Miller, president of the West Jefferson Business Association, spoke to the board about several ideas the association is considering to boost downtown activity: daytime speakers in the bumpouts to play music, replacing remaining Christmas wreaths with snowflake lights to stay up through winter, wrapping downtown trees in white lights, pressure washing sidewalks and exploring a temporary winter ice skating rink. The minutes record no board decisions on those proposals.
Town Manager Brantley Price reported several operational updates: FEMA repairs are proceeding slowly, a six-month extension on the stormwater project at the maintenance lot and park has been approved to secure additional funding, and design work for storm drains on Long Street and Main Street is nearly complete. He reported taxes collected to date total 96% of the levy and said sales tax is "up 7% from the previous year with year to date at a 5.5% increase." He also noted the police department has received a vehicle repair quote of $13,500.
Price announced a ribbon-cutting for Paddy Mountain scheduled for May 9 with Governor Josh Stein attending. The minutes say Paddy Mountain had over 600 hikers in April and list "70 people using the trail in one year" in the same report.
In public comments, Shelley Elliott requested an additional bathroom near the park playground; William Sands commended work on Paddy Mountain Park. The board thanked staff and those in attendance.
