Committeeman Kapetis sharply criticized the GOMES construction project’s timeline and site security during the Springfield Township Committee meeting, saying the contractor’s poor track record and extended delays have left the township with safety concerns.
"They are not the most professional... based on their poor track record, I don't have that much confidence that they're going to secure this site the way that we feel it should be appropriate," Kapetis said, urging the township to secure the construction site and bill the owner for associated costs.
The township administrator said staff continues to pursue the matter and has scheduled another call with the developer. "If it doesn't happen, then we're gonna have to take steps," the administrator said, adding officials could require security or pursue legal remedies if the owner fails to comply. The administrator also noted past fines and ongoing enforcement discussions.
Why it matters: Committee members framed the issue as a public-safety and liability concern because unsecured construction sites can create hazards for pedestrians and neighbors. Kapetis framed immediate securing of the site as a priority ahead of a project anniversary (July 4) cited in the discussion.
What next: Officials said they will continue outreach to the owner and may escalate to court action or require on-site security if corrective steps are not taken. No formal enforcement vote was recorded during the meeting.
