Summary
Shoreline staff briefed the commission on completed and upcoming capital projects — including repaving, a Fire Station training classroom, irrigation and reservoir upgrades, golf-course/landfill work, the Bistro/boathouse expansion and safe-parking expansion at Lot B — and described volunteer and habitat programs.
Shoreline staff presented a comprehensive update on capital projects at Shoreline Park and North Bayshore during the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on April 8.
The presentation highlighted recently completed work — including a new classroom at Fire Station 5 and repaving of Shoreline’s entrance and Crittenden Lane — and in-design projects such as a recycled-water reservoir at Charleston Park and irrigation pump-station upgrades. Staff said the Back Nine golf-course landfill-gas collection replacement and course renovation are in early design and will likely take several years, and that the Bistro/boathouse expansion will add kitchen space, ADA-accessible restrooms and façade improvements and is expected to last 12–18 months.
On homelessness and services, staff said the safe-parking program in Lot B will expand in phases, with phase 2 improving Lot B surface to support RV parking and staffing; phase 3 will extend the program north in the lot. The presenter said the city expects to nearly double the safe-parking capacity at the Shoreline site to accommodate vehicles displaced by closure of another lot.
Staff also summarized the South Bay Salt Pond transition project, trail work (including a new Song Sparrow trail), bridge replacements on the golf course and volunteer partnerships (Guardian Project, Grassroots Ecology and others) that support habitat restoration and burrowing-owl foraging habitat. Several commissioners thanked staff and suggested a future Shoreline tour for commissioners to view project sites.
Staff noted coordination challenges with Live Nation event scheduling and Google I/O, and flagged expected temporary impacts to parking and operations during peak summer months while construction and paving occur.
