Nursing home reports tight staffing, agency nursing costs and maintenance upgrades

Summary
LaSalle County Nursing Home reported a March average census of about 70, revenue of $663,379.72 and expenses of $676,179.63; officials said agency nursing costs are high, RN vacancies remain, fire doors were replaced and pipe repairs are underway while the facility operates under a conditional license.
Britney, the nursing home finance officer, told the committee the facility averaged roughly 70 residents in March and had five admissions during the month. "For March, our average census was 70," Britney said.
She provided a financial snapshot: March revenue was $663,379.72 and expenses were $676,179.63, with a cash position of approximately $2,904,594.73. Britney said agency nursing use remained significant — earlier in the meeting she cited about $69,000 in agency nurse costs for a recent month — and the home currently lists seven RN vacancies, two LPN vacancies and seven CNA vacancies. "Without that [agency use], I would say maybe we would be making a little bit of money," she said.
Interim administrator Bobbie (introduced by Britney) described operational and maintenance activity: the dining room fire doors have been replaced, piping repairs on B wing are about 50% complete and the boiler room floodgate has arrived with framing scheduled. Wesley, a maintenance representative, showed pictures of the new fire door shutters and said work took about a day and a half; he said the kitchen resumed normal service by the second day after the project.
Committee members asked whether the nursing home is financially viable; Britney said the facility generally breaks even by year’s end because a tax levy provides substantial revenue. "At the end of this year, I would anticipate we would still be in the 3 millions as we have been," she said, adding she did not expect the home to be losing money overall once the levy is included.
The nursing home presented routine bills and monthly reports, which the committee approved by voice vote. The meeting ended after a motion to adjourn carried by voice vote.
What’s next: Nursing home staff said they will continue hiring to reduce agency use, complete maintenance projects and review a possible pharmacy vendor change, and the interim administrator will remain through May 1 while the county evaluates longer‑term administrator options.
