Plain City council moves forward on 3‑way stop at Lantern Lane & Doe Street after resident complaints

Council discussed resident complaints about speeding and drivers running a school bus stop at the Lantern Lane and Doe Street intersection and agreed to move forward with a resolution to declare the intersection a three‑way stop and to add crosswalk markings.

Council members and staff described frequent speeding on Lantern Lane near the school bus stop and said residents had requested traffic calming. The police chief said a three‑way stop could slow traffic and saw no safety issues but cautioned that stop signs sometimes cause noise and driver behavior changes. "I don't see any safety issues with it," the chief said, while noting drivers and nearby residents will need time to adapt.

Council discussed options including a full three‑way stop, a stop sign for only one direction, painted crosswalks, raised crosswalks, speed humps and evaluating drainage and placement for the crosswalk. Staff said costs are largely limited to signage and pavement markings and that stop signs can be removed if they do not produce the desired effect.

Council instructed staff to draft a resolution; the matter was slated for first reading as Resolution 16‑20‑26 and placed on the next agenda for further consideration and possible waiver of the second reading.
