"One of the minutia things that we talked about this last year was Hog Island and the use of light and heavy industrial," Kelly said, urging that the topic be recognized in the staff annual plan and not drop in priority.
Several planning commissioners and commissioners echoed that light and heavy industrial uses require more study to ensure public safety, emergency response access and clarity about where industrial activities are appropriate in the county. A planning commissioner said the community has asked for quick access to heavy equipment in emergencies, and worried that the topic could be deprioritized given staff workloads.
Speakers asked staff to add the topic to upcoming work plans and to provide more regular coordination between the Board and the planning commission so that both bodies can weigh in on where and how industrial uses should be allowed. No zoning changes were proposed or adopted at the meeting; the groups asked staff to return with proposals or maps for future public review.
