The Southampton County sheriff asked the Board of Supervisors on April 8 for help increasing pay to retain and recruit deputies, saying the office is short-staffed and would benefit from a pay supplement.
"We are 10 short," the sheriff said, asking the board to "do all that you can to help me get those guys something paid to make sure that they are compensated for the way the job that they do." He urged the board to make deputies’ pay competitive to reduce turnover and attract applicants from other agencies.
A county staff member later spoke in support of pay increases, saying a deputy-clerk starting salary of $32,547 is inadequate for a single person to live on and asking the board to raise starting pay to match neighboring localities.
No formal action was taken at the April 8 meeting on compensation adjustments; such changes would require a budget amendment or inclusion in the final FY2027 budget.
