A board member told trustees at the July 10 meeting that the board had received an email from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) of New Jersey and urged colleagues to read it in full before the next meeting.
"I encourage all my board members to read the email completely," the member said, adding that CAIR asked the board to consider whether it should take action similar to the National Education Association and sever ties with the Anti-Defamation League.
The member asked trustees to "come back with what your feelings are and what your thoughts are" at the Aug. 14 meeting so the board could decide whether to pursue an action. No motion or vote on that request occurred at the July meeting.
Board members did not debate the merits of the request during the meeting; the item was placed on the agenda for future discussion. The record shows the topic was raised as a request for consideration rather than as a proposed policy change.
