Summary
District workforce development leaders reported monthly progress on opening six college-and-career centers in August 2026, saying 67% of staff positions are filled, curriculum is nearly selected and work-based learning activities are underway. Board members asked about multilingual outreach and inclusion for students with disabilities.
District leaders updated the board on preparations to open six college-and-career centers in August 2026 and outlined monthly milestones as the launch approaches.
Verna Martin, senior executive director for secondary schools and academics, described an engagement team meeting biweekly with school and district leaders to finalize staffing, curricula and schedules. Kate Hayden, executive director for workforce development, said the district has filled 18 of 27 positions (67%), completed curriculum selection for 93% of pathway courses and continues recruitment for specialized roles in construction, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology.
Hayden listed recent work-based learning activities — career panels, career fairs, industry worksite tours and an AI boot camp hosted by the Oklahoma City Thunder — and noted that about 51% of middle and high schools have participated in workforce engagements this year. Board members asked how the district is communicating opportunities to Spanish-speaking families; staff said informational flyers are translated and the district uses a two-way messaging tool (TalkingPoints) that allows families to respond in their language. Trustees also asked about accommodations and inclusion for students with disabilities; staff said additional written information will be provided in the next update.
District staff said monthly updates will continue as the opening approaches.
