Teachers urge OKCPS to adopt clearer attendance policy and student rewards

Aaron Baker, a 14-year educator who teaches U.S. government at Capitol Hill High School, said he came to model civic engagement and asked the district for help creating district-level systems that encourage attendance. Baker said teachers alone do not have the tools to secure necessary attendance levels.
Matt Hesser, also a Capitol Hill teacher, asked the board to consider district-wide practices that recognize high attendance and perfect attendance for students, including rewarding seniors who maintain strong attendance records. Hesser said recognizing students can be low-cost but meaningful and argued that in-person education is more effective than virtual credit recovery alone.
Both speakers asked the board to engage the district in policy and programmatic work to support classroom attendance and student recognition.
