Police Chief Kijanowski told the Kewanee City Council on July 14 that the department has received concerns about motorized scooters failing to follow traffic laws and that existing local ordinances contain contradictory language. The Chief said the contradictions should be cleaned up; Councilmembers provided direction and asked the Chief to return with proposed ordinance changes for a future vote.
Chief Kijanowski also presented 'Urban SDK', a software tool that would allow officers to identify where speeding violations occur. The Chief said he would gather additional information and return to Council with recommendations about whether to proceed with deployment.
The Council did not take formal action on either matter at the meeting; both were discussed as 'discussion only' items and will return to the Council for further consideration. No enforcement policy changes or procurement decisions were approved at this session.
