Residents press Pasco County on McKendree Road safety and construction traffic

Tanya Riddlesworth, a McKendree Road resident, told the Pasco County Planning Commission during general public comment that growing traffic from a nearby hockey school, construction vehicles and a county maintenance facility has turned a once-quiet dirt road into a safety hazard for children and neighbors. “We actually had an accident right in front of our house,” Riddlesworth said, noting drivers “just flying around the corner.”
Maria Martinez, another resident, added that school buses and frequent dropoffs make the curve near her property particularly dangerous and argued the dust and washboard condition of the dirt surface are worsening because construction traffic is using the road despite limits that prohibit it.
David Engel, Pasco County planning and economic development director, told the commission the McKendree segment is part of a Wildcat Bales MPUD with a local-traffic restriction on that portion of the road and proposed an on-site walk-through with the MPUD team to identify unanswered questions and report back to residents. Engel said staff would pursue outstanding issues with the developer and MPUD team and get back to the community.
County staff also said they are updating the development review manual and working with a vendor to improve online posting of public hearing notices and continuance information, a change residents said would help them keep track of schedule updates.
The commission did not take formal action on the McKendree comments at the meeting; staff committed to follow up with residents and the MPUD team.
