Summary
Staff from Little Alice Learning Center presented the center's play-based curriculum — citing early writing, reading, art, sensory, math, dramatic play and gross-motor development — and the board recognized Erica Stein as employee of the month and Kelly McCarty on her retirement after 39 years.
Representatives of the Little Alice Learning Center (LALC) presented the board with an overview of their play-based approach to early learning, summarized by the motto "purposeful play, powerful learning." Presenters described how early writing, reading and language development are supported through classroom materials and staged activities; the art, sensory and math/manipulative centers provide opportunities for fine-motor skills and concept development; and dramatic play and blocks foster social skills, storytelling and spatial reasoning.
One presenter said early writing ‘‘might look like scribbles’’ at the start of the year and that teachers use materials such as markers, stamps and name cards to scaffold the stages of writing. The art center was described as fostering creative expression and fine-motor skill development, while sensory play supports hands-on experimentation that introduces basic math and science concepts. Presenters said students receive daily gross-motor time (30 minutes to an hour) to support coordination and health.
The board also recognized staff achievements: Erica Stein was named employee of the month; Kelly McCarty’s retirement after 39 years in education and 19 years as a principal (noted as instrumental in starting LALC) was acknowledged; and the board thanked wrestling coach Matt Collins for 19 years of service as he departs coaching duties. The presentations emphasized the link between early-childhood programming and kindergarten readiness; board members praised the LALC staff, invited site visits, and congratulated recognized employees.
This presentation and recognitions occurred during the board’s regular meeting and were followed by routine consent-agenda business.
