County approves school salt agreements, four-way stop and four highway hires; detour agreements and permitting changes authorized

County Engineer Kevin Russel presented multiple highway and public-works items at the Feb. 17 Harrison County commissioners meeting. The commissioners approved agreements with school corporations for the county highway department to supply road salt, with each school reimbursing the county for material costs.
The board authorized Commissioner Nelson Stepro to place a bid on a used distributor in Gibson County contingent on county council approval. Commissioners also authorized the county to sign INDOT unofficial detour agreements for State Road 11, State Road 211 and State Road 111 and asked the highway department to place signage on detour routes to assist unfamiliar drivers.
Russel said discussion of the Corydon Ridge Road reconstruction was postponed while a READI grant application by Darrell Voelker is finalized. The board approved re-signing the intersection of Harrison Heth Road and Union Chapel Road as a four-way stop. Commissioners took a web-based permitting service proposal under advisement (no fee for driveway permits, possible fee for right-of-way permits) and approved offers of employment to four highway crew applicants: Joshua Ealy, Nevin Wellman, Jason Phipps and Christopher Immel.
The highway items were approved largely by unanimous vote and reflect routine procurement, staffing and traffic control decisions intended to maintain county road operations.
