Turner Elementary Principal Morgan Efrom presented a 'Student Voice in Action' showcase at the Dec. 4 West Chicago ESD 33 board meeting, highlighting a student-created Turner Fight Song and the Wild Tiger Cafe, a student-run classroom enterprise.
Students Mateo and Millie led a PBIS assembly performance and described how first- and second-grade students and self-contained classes collaborate to take orders, problem-solve and deliver services during the weekly Wild Tiger Cafe. Efrom credited Turner’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) for supporting school events such as Fall Fest, Book Fair and Holiday Shop.
Efrom told trustees that parent participation during fall parent-teacher conferences rose to 91% in fall 2025 from 86% in fall 2024. During a 'Superintendent for the Day' activity, third-grade students Matteo H.C., Camila P. and Kaylani W. reported on student perceptions of safety, noting students feel safer when they are near trusted adults and when drills are practiced.
The board added a standing 'Board Salutes' item to formally recognize staff and community members; the Dec. 4 salutes included Guadalupe Aguillon (Pioneer Preschool) and Penny Powers, an IL Central bus driver recognized for day-to-day support of students.
