The Calvert County Board of Education voted to post a draft immigration-enforcement policy (Policy 11-20) for a 30-day public review after a presentation by Cecilia Lewis, Director of Student Services.
Lewis said the policy was drafted using model language from the Office of the Attorney General to ensure compliance with the Maryland Values Act (House Bill 1222, enacted 2025), which identifies public schools as sensitive locations and directed the Attorney General’s Office to issue guidance for staff interactions with immigration enforcement agents. "The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all schools remain safe and have protected spaces for students and staff regardless of citizenship status," Lewis said.
Board members confirmed the proposed policy largely reflects state-mandated language. "So what you've included in this policy is what is mandated by the state, correct?" a board member asked; Lewis replied that the recommended policy uses the model language to address all state criteria. The superintendent asked that the board post the policy for 30 days, and the board agreed to do so.
What’s next: The policy will be available for 30 days of public review as requested; staff remained available to answer questions prior to any motion to adopt following the review period.
