The Harford County Board of Education approved a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) offering — AP Business with Personal Finance — to be available in the 2026–27 school year.
Joe Connolly, supervisor of CTE and magnet programs, said the course blends business topics (entrepreneurship, marketing, accounting) with personal-finance skills (budgeting, saving, investing) and uses College Board projects such as a business canvas and a financial-advisor project. He told the board that College Board materials are provided at no cost and that the district had identified teachers and placed the course in the student education guide; 328 students across schools have requested the class so far.
Board members asked about teacher identification, training options and minimum enrollment thresholds. Connolly said principals and department chairs work with counselors to identify teacher interest, and that teachers can pursue College Board training; grants are available to support training. The board moved, seconded and approved the course for implementation in 2026–27.
The board's approval authorizes the Office of CTE to implement the course and coordinate scheduling, teacher training, and outreach so students may select the class in upcoming registration cycles.
