Board acts on charter renewals: votes recorded on New Horizons, New Millennium

The Los Angeles Unified board considered multiple charter renewal items during the Dec. 16 meeting and heard public testimony from school leaders, staff, parents and students. New Horizons Charter Academy and New Millennium Secondary were among the petitions discussed in a public‑hearing block that drew large attendance.
New Horizons Executive Director Richard Thomas and numerous students, staff and parents outlined academic progress and commitments to special education services and campus improvements, including a new permanent facility. New Millennium representatives likewise described the school’s small‑school model and student supports for credit recovery and students with disabilities.
The board recorded roll‑call votes on the agenda items listed as Tabs 23 and 24; meeting minutes show motions carried in both cases and the items were concluded as listed on the agenda. Public speakers on both sides described strong student outcomes and community support for the campuses; proponents highlighted recent gains in ELA and math growth and improved English‑learner progress as evidence of progress.
As with other agenda‑item votes, the board’s actions were procedural and subject to subsequent implementation and monitoring by the charter office and district staff.
Because the board considered many charter petitions at once and the public hearing included dozens of speakers, district staff will publish the official minutes and committee follow‑up notes that record the administrative details and next steps for any required corrective actions and oversight.
