Board members recognized Calexico High School and its welding students for hosting a regional welding competition on March 28 that drew teams from neighboring districts.
A board speaker said the event featured two divisions: structural welding and fabrication welding. Brawley High School won first place in structural welding; Calexico’s welding team won first place in fabrication welding. The competition used outside industry adjudicators, including a master welder from IID and representatives from union and industry organizations.
Welding instructor Axel Camarillo told the board he ‘‘loves welding’’ and praised his students’ effort and craftsmanship, noting real‑world demand for welders and fabricators. The board presented certificates to student participants and praised the event for providing hands‑on experience and industry connections.
Why it matters: Trustees said the competition highlights the value of CTE programming to prepare students for well‑paid trade careers and provides evidence for continued investment in hands‑on courses and industry partnerships.
