Board approves Proposition 28 annual report and PS Arts partnership for TK/K

The Redondo Beach Unified School District board unanimously approved the district’s 2023–24 Proposition 28 arts and music annual report and an MOU with nonprofit PS Arts to provide theater, dance and music lessons to all transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students for the 2024–25 school year. The motion to approve the report and the PS Arts agreement passed 5–0; the student advisory vote was recorded as aye.
Doctor Garland, presenting the report, said Proposition 28—approved by voters in November 2022—provides funding for arts education in California public schools and requires each local educational agency (LEA) to submit an annual report to the California Department of Education describing programs funded, FTE staff, people served and school sites providing arts instruction with Proposition 28 funds. "As a condition of receiving funds, an LEA must submit an annual report approved by its governing board to the CDE," Doctor Garland stated.
On the PS Arts MOU, staff said the expenditure is already included in the district’s 2024–25 Proposition 28 annual site plans approved earlier, and that PS Arts will deliver instruction in theater, dance and music to TK and kindergarten students. Board members praised the expanded arts access and voted to approve the MOU and to submit the annual report to the CDE and post it on the district website.
